The Federal Trade Commission recently reported that the fastest growing crime in America is Identity Theft, with an estimated 10 million Americans victimized in some way by the loss of their personal information…most significantly through the release of their Social Security Number.
Normally, there are no out-of-pocket expenses incurred by a victim of Identity Theft. Rather, the largest loss is found in time – often estimated in hundreds of hours – to restore their name…and their credit.
Identity theft insurance provides reimbursement to crime victims for the cost of restoring their identity and repairing credit reports. On average, these policies cost between $25 and $50 for $15,000 to $25,000 worth of coverage. Identity theft insurance provides reimbursement for expenses such as phone bills, lost wages, notary and certified mailing costs and sometimes attorney fees with the prior consent of the insurer.
